The stage is set for the 2010 Kustom Airstrike South Africa surfing event. Taking place on the Dolphin Coast of KwaZulu Natal on Wednesday, this tournament is the South African edition of an international, 8-month long happening, open to any surfer, and has a R5,000 winner take all purse. It is a single-move surf contest, with the winner being the surfer who performs the best aerial move on the day.
Surfers invited into the event in Durban are allowed to use jet ski assistance, but no straps are allowed. Some of the invited surfers include Chad Du Toit, Ricky Basnett, Alan Johns, Dane and Dale Staples and Josh and Dan Redman, who constitute the cream of aerial surfers in the country.
The forecast for the day of surfing on Wednesday looks favourable for the event. A medium swell is predicted, with three to four-foot sets primed for the Dolphin Coast, which is the ideal size for such a contest. Coupled with this is a great wind prediction, starting with a fresh offshore north-west landbreeze, and clocking all the way around through south-west to east. When it comes to air contests, onshore is the new offshore, and the easterly could see some big punts from the competitors.
The prize of R5,000 is coming in cold hard cash, good old blue Hundreds, with the winner taking it all home in the special Kustom carry case.
