THE KUSTOM AIR STRIKE
GLOBAL AERIAL SURFING COMPETITION
2010 OVERVIEW
The Winning Entry
Summary: The Kustom Air Strike will be won by the individual surfer who – based on review of validly submitted video images – successfully completes the single most innovative and ground breaking aerial manoeuvre during the event period. Judging criteria is purely SUBJECTIVE and will be judged from the votes of the general public (voting via kustomairstrike.com) and then by a panel of experts, surfers, photographers and surf magazine editors and writers.
The contest is a winner takes all format, and the prize is USD$50,000. The videographer who captures the definitive video clip of the winning ride will also be awarded USD$5,000.
The surfer must not be strapped or otherwise secured to his surfboard whilst performing the aerial manoeuvre, however the surfer may be “towed” or “whipped” into the wave, by a motor powered jet ski, or any other type of motor craft.
THE KUSTOM AIR STRIKE
OFFICIAL RULES
- Event Period: The contest begins on 1 January 2010 and ends on 1 August 2010. In order to allow timely on-line posting of entered rides, entries must be submitted within seven days of the date of the ride. Rides occurring during the final week of the event period must be entered no later than 7 August, 2010. Delays due to legitimate extenuating circumstances may be allowed in Kustom’s absolute discretion.
- Who can enter: Video submissions are invited from all comers.
- Location: All aerial manoeuvres performed by entered contestants at all surf spots in the world may be considered for the Kustom Air Strike prize.
- How to enter: To enter the Kustom Air Strike competition the following must be sent to Kustom at the official address listed below:
- an official Entry Form and Release, signed by the surfer featured in the video footage and the camera person/videographer. The official Entry Form includes a photo release by the featured surfer allowing Kustom to use footage and images of the surfer’s ride in future advertising and promotion without any fee;
- footage of the surfer and the aerial manouver.
- Multiple Entries:
- There is no limit to how many entries a surfer or videographer may enter into the Kustom Air Strike competition. A surfer and videographer may, using one official Entry Form, submit multiple aerial manouvers by the same surfer (during the same session at the same location or during different sessions at different locations) filmed by the same videographer.
- Surfers are encouraged to coordinate with any and all videographers who may have captured images of the manoeuvre in question to ensure they jointly enter the images in the contest.
- Surfers grant to GSM Duranbah Pty Ltd & its authorised media partners separately an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty free, worldwide license to use the surfer’s image and voice as used in footage/stills and name.
- Video Entries:
- May be delivered by digital videotape or as Full Quality NTSC Quicktime files on disc or uploaded to the event FTP site (details provided on request). Kustom is not responsible for damage to or loss of entries while in transit.
- An unedited version of the video must be submitted including all available frames of the start and end of the ride and without any embedded bugs or watermarks. It is vital that the start of the ride is clearly documented, so the judges can be clear if the surfer has been towed into the wave or not. Whilst “tow ins” are permitted, the assistance provided will be taken into account upon judging. Kustom officials will appropriately trim down and otherwise prepare the clip for presentation in the following format:
> Kustom and Kustom Air Strike Logo
> SLATE: Surfer name (and home country ID)
> SLATE: Location and date of ride
> Video of Ride
> SLATE:Videographer credit (one name or one production company)
> Kustom and Kustom Air Strike Logo - Videographers shooting from the water must be experienced in handling surf conditions.
- Videographer grants to GSM Duranbah Pty Ltd & its authorised media partners separately an irrevocable, perpetual, royalty free, worldwide license to use the footage/stills. The videographer warrants that it is the exclusive owner of copyright in that footage/stills.
- Photographic Details
- Video images of the ride will be the only evidence accepted in determining the winner of Kustom Air Strike competition. Personal testimonials, "expert" opinions, or any other data purporting to establish the quality of a manoeuvre will not be considered.
- Angles and Clarity: Preference may be given to video clips that are shot from those angles that maximise clarity of both the wave and of the manoeuvre. Action which is not clearly visible due to loss of focus, haze, darkness or other visual interference cannot be considered.
- Film and Video Stock: Quality reproduction is an essential requirement of the winning video clip and therefore technically superior video or motion picture formats are given preference.
- If different Image Entry Forms are submitted by different videographers of the same winning aerial manoeuvre it is in the judges’ absolute discretion which entry is the winner.
- Judging and Event Procedures
- Selection of Finalist Rides: The finalist video clips will be selected by the general public, through the on-line voting system. After the closing date of the contest window, the five (5) video clips with the highest number of individual votes will be deemed the finalists. Only the finalist clips will then be eligible to win the Kustom Air Strike competition.
- Judging Panel: The Kustom Air Strike judging panel will consist of a small international group of surfers, surfing media representatives and aerial experts. The panel will be sufficiently diverse so as to prevent any manipulation of the results.
Additional judging positions may be allotted to a limited number of interested parties as determined by the event director to be in the best interest of the event. - Judging Methodology: Following the official close of the contest period, the judging panel will convene, review the finalist manoeuvres and rank the finalist entries from first (1st) to fifth (5th). Judges will not vote individually, but as a group to decide the final rankings.
- Judging Criteria and Guidance: The basic valuation criteria in determining the Kustom Air Strike Award is:
"The Kustom Air Strike will be won by the individual surfer who -- based on review of available video images – successfully completes the single most innovative and ground breaking aerial manoeuvre during the event period."
The following additional guidance is also provided:
"While the determination of "innovative and ground breaking" will always be a subjective matter, the panel is urged to reward height, style and completion." - If there is a dispute or dead lock within the judging panel, a final, over riding decision can be made by Kustom.
- Attendance: Each year, an awards ceremony will be held (at a location to be announced) where the Kustom Air Strike finalists and winner will be announced. Winning surfers and videographers MUST be present at the ceremony in order to receive the cash prizes.
- Safety: The single most important statement to be made in outlining the rules for this competition is that safety must be of the highest importance. Any attempts that are extraordinarily dangerous, discourteous or unsportsmanlike are strictly prohibited and will under no circumstances be considered for the prize.
- In surfing to obtain the footage or taking the footage you do so at your own risk. You must obey all laws.
- By entering the competition (sending in footage or attempting to gather footage) you release GSM Duranbah Pty Ltd, its associated sponsors and authorised media partners from any liability for injury, damage to people or property or death whatsoever that may be incurred while surfing or filming during the competition period.
- Successful Manoeuvre Defined: For a manoeuvre to be deemed completed, the surfer must complete or land the aerial manoeuvre without being strapped or secured to the surfboard in any way. The use of any motor craft (for example jet ski) to tow or whip the surfer into the wave is acceptable. The ruling of Kustom about this is final.
- Surfer and Surfboard Defined: While not meant to stifle innovation, to claim the Kustom Air Strike prize, the surfer must ride the wave in a manner and on equipment consistent with recent surfing history. Only stand-up surfing will be considered. No powered equipment is eligible, including motorized or wind-driven craft.
- Cheating: Computer manipulation opens up the possibility for fraud. In order to eliminate the chances of a fake or enhanced manoeuvre being considered, source material must be submitted for examination on specific request. Any video clips shot at relatively obscure locations that are not witnessed by a large number of observers will be subject to special scrutiny. If Kustom accepts an entry into the competition but then considers that the entry does not satisfy all the criteria of this competition then that entry can be ruled out of the competition. Kustom’s decision in this regard will be taken in its absolute discretion and will be final.
- The Kustom Air Strike event and the Contest Director reserve the right to add, amend or adjust the rules of the contest as appropriate to accommodate real-life developments. A list of winners will be posted on or before 30 September 2010 on the Kustom Air Strike web site.
